If you are a disabled and you haven’t attained education, people don’t come close to you, but because of my education, my wife accepted me. I didn’t experience discrimination because of my level of education. I command respect because I have a high level of education. I taught my wife. Excuse me to say, but I taught her from the scratch. I taught her how to write. I took her to adult education, and we did an engagement. We got married and had two children.

My problem started from infancy. It affected my arms and my leg. I was suffering fits. Whenever I was going to school, I was always sick. I felt severe pain in my head.  As I got to the secondary school level, the doctor said if I continued, this sickness would continue, so I shouldn’t strain my brain by going to school. I was going to go to the university to do land economy, but because of the sickness, I dropped out.

My father was in the U.S. and he established a communications business for me here. These days, you see these mobile phones, but it used to be that only ones who had money could have a phone. Now that everyone is using mobile phones, they don’t come to the business center. I also used to be at the roadside, but now they’ve used stalls to cover my place, so this resulted in the collapse of my business.

If a person with a disability came to you for advice, what would you tell them?

I would tell him or her to go to school and learn.

What will make people with disabilities become successful?

Education can raise you up. Or secondly, you can get help in doing business and starting some small business. But if you have a disability and you attain education, where they can enter, you can enter.

What is the most difficult thing you’ve experienced?

One – if you write an application to a job place, they will tell you tomorrow come, but when you go there, they don’t pick you, and you get fed up.

What is your happiest moment?** **

I feel proud that I have children.

What is your hope for your life?

I hope I can get something to do, a job, to bring up my children so that in my old age, they can look after me.

What is your hope for other people with disabilities in Ghana?

I prefer them giving themselves to God and going to school and being social.

Why do people mistreat people with disabilities?

They think if you are disabled, you cannot do anything, so they don’t want you to come close to them.

How can we change that?

Through the government creating jobs for them and educating those who have not attained education.

Do you think the government is doing enough?

Last year, my friend and I went to a training organized by the government for a year and over, and they said when we completed the course, we would be employed right away. Since then, we have not been. In Ghana, they don’t care of the disabled very well.

What should the government focus on?

Creating jobs for the disabled, so they do not depend on people.
