Disability is also a form of ability because I have an ability in me with sewing. I would see disability as ability and would describe disability as ability in a special way because I dare to do things differently.

I was very little, when my mom says I fell into fire. I went to the hospital and I was given an injection and I became paralyzed. It’s like a fire injection. You get burnt and then injected. I have no idea what sort of injection, but I got burnt and I was given an injection then I became paralyzed. I went through verbal abuse in the hands of my peers and even my siblings in the neighborhood. That is the most painful thing I used to go through, the verbal abuse and stigma.

When I got to class 6 and I was graduating the junior level, there was nobody to support me financially. Because my mom had to move from the village to Accra in search of a job, so there was nobody to support me in the village. So I had to also abscond from the village and come here to the city to find some work to do because I was suffering in the village. My mom was able to find a server job selling yam. When I came my mom helped me and put me into a sewing apprenticeship.

My disability has brought me a lot of troubles and predicaments because, as a lady like me, when I came to meet my mom, though I was helping her with the yam business, it was there that I met this guy who impregnated me. He proposed to me to marry me but he just impregnated me and absconded. He absconded to Kumasi and promised coming back but he didn’t. He left me alone, he didn’t help me, no money, nothing. Throughout my pregnancy I didn’t see him. My mom was the one who was taking care of me. So it was a result of my disability that this guy didn’t marry me. He impregnated me and then ran away. He did not find me beautiful again, didn’t see me to be marriage material, because he thinks that I’m a disabled person. So I went through a difficult time. I think that my disability is the cause of all this situation.

In general, what do you think are the biggest barriers for persons with disabilities in your country?

Persons with disabilities are not taken care of and they are rejected and abused – physical and verbal abuse. They are the poorest people in the population of Ghana; they are considered as the most poor people in society, they are considered as the most cursed people in society. I think that the stigma and the poverty are the biggest barriers.

What should be done to improve this situation?

What will improve the lives of persons with disabilities is financial support or any form of support. persons with disabilities need to be supported in every area, in every aspect of life.

What is your best ability?

I’m a designer and I can design very well. For that reason, if I’m able to establish my own business I can do exports.

If you could have any career or job, what would it be?

I would choose to be a tailor because that is my ability and my skill now. I would rather improve upon it and then do exports.

What is disability?

Disability is also a form of ability because I have an ability in me with sewing. I would see disability as ability and would describe disability as ability in a special way because I dare to do things differently.

What advice would you give to another person who has an ability in a special way?

I would advise them to work. Disability is in stages. If the person is like me, I would advise her to try her hands on something, like how I have tried my hands on tailoring. I would advise them to try their hands on their ability and with that they can improve their lives. And by so doing, they can someday get the support to establish themselves.
