I think the international community should help Ghana to establish more disability-friendly schools in Ghana, especially vocational schools, which must be accessible. And also help Ghana to establish orthopedic centers for the disabled.

When I was 6 years old I fell sick and I had pains in my right leg. Then it developed into a very big boil. And when it broke, by the time it was healed, my leg stretched. I couldn’t bend it again. The happiest experience in my life is when I started walking. Because when I fell sick I was not walking. So when I started walking I became very very happy.

My difficult or bad experience is I feel like doing certain things. But because of my disability, if my friends are doing it, I can’t do it, whereas it is my interest to be involved in that practice. But because of my disability I can’t do it. Those things hurt me a lot. In my family there is no discrimination, except from my peers. They do discriminate. Sometimes my peers don’t like me to move with them. So normally when I want to go with them, they will hurry up and double up and leave me because they know I can’t move faster.

What is a major barrier for persons with disabilities in Ghana?

As a young upcoming lady, educational sponsorship is the big barrier for those of us, especially the young ones, who want to climb the educational ladder. People are not ready to invest in the education of the disabled. That is the very difficult barrier I can say.

What can Ghanaians do to improve the lives of persons with disabilities?

I say that the government should invest in the education of the disabled, and also invest in vocation for the disabled. With this, the disabled can be well-developed.

And the international community?

I think the international community should help Ghana to establish more disability-friendly schools in Ghana, especially vocational schools, which must be accessible. And also help Ghana to establish orthopedic centers for the disabled.

If you meet another person with a disability, what would you tell them?

I will encourage that person to take life very easy, to take things easy.

What is your best ability?

Selling.

If you could have any job, what would it be?

My interest is in pedicure. I want to be a beautician.
