Really, my relatives and the community, they don’t do anything to show discrimination. But I, myself, I don’t feel like mingling with them. Because I knew myself that I was walking alright – my legs were alright before I became like this.
I was a toddler, around three or four years. My mother told me I was crying one day. I was crying seriously so she came and picked me up and she didn’t know what was happening to me. So she took me to the hospital and they detected that something was wrong with my legs. My legs started shrinking. The doctors tried and tried, but I became like this. So this is not how my legs were.
Really, my relatives and the community, they don’t do anything to show discrimination. But I, myself, I don’t feel like mingling with them. Because I knew myself that I was walking alright – my legs were alright before I became like this. So when I remember it I feel very sorry for myself so I don’t like going to the public. So I cannot say people discriminate against me.
The difficult experience that I have had and I always have is that it is my interest to carry some food items, go around the community to sell. But because of my situation I cannot carry things on my head to go and sell, whereas my interest is hawking. But I cannot carry things.
What is a big difficulty experienced by persons with disabilities in Ghana?
I think the most difficult problem is a job, the unavailability of jobs that we the disabled can do. We do not have jobs. The government does not provide any avenue for us so that we can also do our work to get our daily bread. That is the most difficult thing that I can see.
What can improve the lives of persons with disabilities?
I think the government should help us in a way or the other by providing funds for the disabled so that those of us who want to go into trading can go into trading, those who want to get into repair work or sewing or business, can do it. They need money to buy machines to do it. So the government should provide funds to support us.
What can the international community do?
I think the international community should support the Disability Needs Foundation so that I know when money is channeled through a group we can also have it. So I pray that the international community should support the Disability Needs Foundation.
If you meet another person with a disability, what would you tell them?
I always advise my colleagues who are disabled, encourage them, tell them to forget about disability.
What makes you happy?
I always become very happy on Sundays when I go to church. That’s when my happiness comes.
What is your best ability?
My best is singing. I sing in church.
